Personalizing Your Home
What are the odds of finding your interior designer 2500 miles away through an internet search & successfully completing a long distance remodeling project, creating the home & garden living space that perfectly matches your lifestyle?
This is just part of the story. Welcome to the Studio City Mid-Century Modern project.
Sometimes you crave a different view...a different spot to hang out where you can chill or entertain with style. Moving back to California after living in Pennsylvania, this homeowner wanted a very special outdoor living space that would change the feeling of her backyard and enhance the mid-century modern style of her home. I designed this slant roof "V" post structure to create an outdoor room that could be used most seasons in sunny California. We furnished it with comfortable lounge furniture and a fabulous enameled brick floor that you can see on the additional pages of this story. Go there and you'll also see the complementary pool equipment room. The before photo in the upper right corner shows the old view of the backyard. Quite a change, isn't it?
This kitchen was in need of a major overhaul as you can see in the before photo. The layout was completely changed to make cooking fun with everything at the homeowner's fingertips. The old peninsula was replaced with an island, opening up the kitchen and dining area. The washer and dryer were moved out of the kitchen. The cooktop and hood now occupy that space.
Lifestyle dictated the kitchen layout and new appliances. A new wine refrigerator with a dedicated countertop and glass storage in the same location serves up how this homeowner entertains.
Another item on the fix it list was the guest bathroom. The homeowner wanted to be proud of her home when guests visit. You can see how ugly the original bathroom was before we gutted it. ****Now, a custom vanity floats on the wall with sparkling glass tile on the backsplash, an undermount sink, wall mounted sconces in addition to overhead lighting and a beautiful decorative mirror from the homeowner's old home. The glass tile used at the sink backsplash runs vertically up the shower wall to add a pop of color and lead the eye upward, making the bathroom feel larger.
Custom furniture lets you have exactly what you want in terms of style, size, comfort, and color. This custom designed mid-century style sofa is so comfortable and fits in the room so well. I'm a big fan of multi-functional rooms and this one meets a lot of needs ~ home office, bookcase storage, comfortable seating, and TV viewing. The geometric rug repeats colors used throughout the room. The Roman shade window covering was also custom designed to work perfectly for the space.
The original entry was not welcoming. Acoustical ceiling panels looked like they came from an old office building and the front door style did not match the house. Luckily, the original slate floor was in beautiful condition. All the elements of the new entry were coordinated with the original floor. The Candice Olson wallpaper ****makes a grand statement in this entry. The pendant is from Visual Comfort.
The old master bath was dismal. Don't miss the additional pages of this story to see the old saloon doors separating the bathroom and bedroom. We had never seen anything like it. Needless to say, everything had to go and this room was expanded slightly. The great thing about remodeling is that you can make things exactly the way you want them. Our homeowner did not want a tub in the master bathroom but she did want to be able to age in place and didn't want to step over a threshold into the shower. We call this barrier free bathing or universal design because it's really great for all ages. The area is sloped with an inline drain and a partial glass partition for water splash. While the footprint is compact, this master bathroom is luxurious. Every day is a spa day thanks to the beautifully crafted custom vanity, custom framed mirrors, elegant wall sconces, organically shaped shower seat, modern crystal hardware, custom bogwood art, and Turkish towels.
