The Philharmonic House of Design Orange County, CA
Why do people atttend design houses? To see new products? Take home ideas? Meet designers? Or do they love the fantasy of it?
Welcome to the Philharmonic House of Design Orange County and the family room suite I designed.
This is the story of how a huge, boring, boxy space morphed into the cool place everyone wanted to be. This design house was being built by a developer to sell and I envisioned a big, active family moving in.I wanted this family room suite to be about activity and shared memories. The wonderful grey stained pool table above is the answer for hours of fun. J. D. Staron's contemporary wool rug adds luxurous comfort under foot.
The room was 25' x 30' so it was easily divided into two areas. One side was for playing pool. The other side was all about comfortable lounging, intimate conversations, listening to music, playing board games, and watching TV.
I thought this Farrow & Ball striped wallpaper could add whimsy and architectural interest. I placed it strategically in the center of the wall on the pool table side of the room and near the corners of the TV wall.
I love mixing high and low price points in my design work. Here Pottery Barn furniture and accessories are at home next to the fabulous J. D. Staron wool area rug, the lush custom drapes with Ralph Lauren Outdoor Fabric, the Farrow & Ball Wallpaper, the custom framed geodes, the collector worthy Assouline books, and various vintage games.
Everywhere corner of this space is cozy, including the one with Williams-Sonoma Home's wing chair and the pencil and charcoal art commissioned for the space.
Here's a take away idea you can use. Show off things you have like dominos, a vintage checkers game set, or a classic Beatles puzzle. Hang decorative dart boards on the wall.
In the bathroom suite, I designed a custom vanity and had it stained a beautiful grey. Thank you to Thoemmes Cabinet Makers, Inc. Modern hardware, custom nickel mirrors with articulating library sconces, and custom open shelving give the room a blended, modern feel.
Thank you also to Cambria USA for allowing me to showcase your new quartz countertop. It's set off by an amazing antique mirror ribbed tile backsplash. Rohl, a sponsor of the event, provided all of the fixtures. In the bathing area, marble cut and fashioned into cube patterns command your attention. Simple grey porcelain tile and the Cambria quartz tub deck contrast nicely with the standout marble.
