Pasadena Showcase House of Design Powder Room
I was honored to design of the powder room at the 2013 Pasadena Showcase House of Design. The powder room serves as both a functional space and an opportunity to make an immediate design statement—offering a moment of surprise, elegance, and personal style for visitors. I was excited about the opportunity to bring a unique and timeless concept to this space, reflecting the sophistication and creativity the Pasadena Showcase House has become known for.
Concept Vision: Sophisticated Elegance with Inspiring Art
The vision for this powder room revolves around creating a sophisticated, elegant powder room with so much artistic interest to capture the imaginations of guests as they enter. Simmering metallic gold sets the background with Phillip Jeffries wallpaper, gold finish sconces, pedestal, and standing mirror. A black marble vessel sink and herringbone mirror above the sink along with bland and white photography creates a dramatic and elegant point of interest in the spaces.
Design Features
You might want to consider these ideas for your powder room:
Color Palette & Materials
Metallics are always a good choice for an elegant powder room. Black is a neutral color that adds sophistication.Layout & Functionality
The Pasadena Showcase House of Design 2013 powder room included two separate spaces which most homeowners do not enjoy. Regardless of the size of your space, try to keep the look streamlined with fewer accessories. Try to create a design that allows maximum space to enter the room and not bump into things. A pedestal style sink creates more visual space compared to a traditional vanity. There will be less storage but in a powder room you need to store very few items.Lighting
Lighting will be central to creating mood and drama. I recommend a layered lighting approach with wall sconces, LED backlighting, or pendant fixtures to highlight architectural details and materials while creating a warm, inviting ambiance. I recommend using dimmer switches for all of your lighting.Finishes & Fixtures
Whether you choose brushed brass, matte black, satin nickel or polished chrome, work on a coordinated look that complements the whole of your home. Always select quality brands that will last a long time without repair needs.Artistic Touches
A powder room should feel intimate yet personalized. Incorporating decorative elements such as custom artwork, a statement mirror, or unique wallpaper will bring personality and creativity to the space without overwhelming its design.
Collaboration & Timeliness
Collaboration was a very important aspect of working with the Pasadena Showcase House leadership. It’s also an important part of all of my projects. I believe collaboration is critically necessary to ensure authentic homes that reflect the homeowners’ lifestyle and interests.
